Visit California
California has much more to offer than the glamour scripted and broadcasted to the world’s millions in the form of Baywatch. True, the sun-drenched state of California does live up to its mystique of movie stars strolling down Sunset Boulevard, of beautiful women in tight shorts roller-skating along Venice Beach but beyond the Hollywood glitter is a wondrously diverse state – a state of the verdant Central Valley teeming with agriculture, misty redwood forests, the mighty Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, miles of stunning coastline, and many world-renowned cities.
The modern metropolis of San Diego set on the sunny Pacific boasts many tourist attractions (SeaWorld, Legoland, Zoo) and stunning beaches. Spend time in the downtown dining and entertainment district, the Gaslamp Quarter, or visit the Old Town, site of the first Spanish outpost and now a state park dedicated to highlighting the city’s raucous early days.
Los Angeles is synonymous with America’s pop culture also has a high appeal with arts institutions like the Getty Center, the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Norton Simon Museum to its credit. You can go wild at the Sunset Strip or enjoy a natural break from the concrete jungle at the Sprawling Griffith Park, Will Rogers State Historic Park, and Malibu Lagoon State Beach. There is also eco-tourism on offer in the remote but accessible Channel Islands National Park where you can explore hiking trails and underwater preserves.
While you can no longer spot celebrities trying to escape the watchful eyes of the media at Palm Springs, worldly pleasures still rule the roost - stunning golf courses, decadent spa resorts, high-end shops and restaurants,— they're all here. And if it is solitude that you seek, you can slip away to the nearby Joshua Tree National Park or Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.
The Death Valley may sound like a trip to hell but the experience is more awe-inspiring than ominous. The largest park in the USA is home to brilliantly colored rock formations of Artists Palette, the peaks of the Panamint Mountains, and the desolate salt flats of Badwater, 282 feet below sea level.
Then there is San Francisco with its diverse personality encompassing a gold-rush history, immigrant traditions and millennial materialism. The standard ‘to do’ list here includes a stroll across the Golden Gate Bridge, a ferry ride to Alcatraz, and a ride on the Powell-Hyde cable car.
California also boasts some of the best wines in the world. The state’s original Wine Country is undeniably scenic and remains a big draw. The frozen lakes and granite peaks of the Sierra Nevada they face stiff competition from Lake Tahoe - a deep, clear, and intensely blue, forest-rimmed body of water straddling the California-Nevada border.
No description of California can be complete without a mention of its themed parks including Disneyland, California Adventure, Knott's Berry Farm, Six Flags Magic Mountain, Universal Studios, and many more.
California, the largest U.S. state by population, offers something for everyone: the theme parks in Southern California, beaches in Malibu, the iconic Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, the vineyards of Napa Valley, and the capital, Sacramento in the northern part of the state.
